8 Tips How to Prepare for a Pole Dance Competition

Wednesday, August 9th, 2017

No matter how many times you competed before, your time on stage might be quite stressful and nerve racking if you are not prepared. The best thing you can do to ease the anxiety before your big competition day is to make sure you are fully ready mentally and physically. Here are 8 tips to guide you through the preparation process, that might seem obvious but usually overlooked. So let’s have a look:

  1. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! There is a giant list of competitions to choose from nowadays depending on your style and level. You simply cannot present your best exotic piece for a pole sport event! Read everything you can find about the competition paying close attention to rules and regulations upon music, compulsory elements, costume choice etc. Do not hesitate to ask questions and reach to the organizers if something seems unclear.
  2. LOOK FOR THE INSPIRATION!!! Remember that the inspiration is everywhere around us, listen to various music (pandora, sportify are great tools for music), try to be creative and original selecting a track for your competition piece; read more books, watch more movies, OBSERVE!!! Be careful creating your character, take into consideration your personal abilities such as strength, flexibility and your ability to actually portrait a character.
  3. START EARLIER!!!! Begin preparing for your competition two three months before, it will give you a chance not only include tricks and combinations you feel comfortable about, but also will give you enough time to work and perfect something new and fresh, assessing your strengths and weaknesses.
  4. CHOREOGRAPH AND BE CREATIVE!!! Today the pole world is loaded with million of moves; the most crazy tricks, gravity defying combination, insane over splits and so on. Remember that first of all you don’t have to do all of them and if you CAN do all of them, DO NOT pack your piece with every single element you have ever learned. Select carefully the trick base of your performance depending on a dance style and story you are telling. Pay close attention to transitions, avoid repetitions (there are at least 10 different ways to get into the brass monkey;);), avoid unnecessary adjustments, play with tempo and levels.
  5. DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! Dance through the entire piece not only when you’re doing your floor work. Try to make that climb as interesting as flowy and dancey as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice, help or feedback your fellow pole friends or even your pole idols on FB or instagram: pole dancers are very kind and generous while sharing their knowledge. That’s why we love our pole community so much!
  6. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS!!! Every move matters, every hand raise, every head turn, every foot position must be an inevitable part of your character! Run through, run through, run through, set a goal (for instance to run through your routine 20 times before the competition) and try to achieve it! Practice creates a habit and eliminates the possibility to forget the sequence at the stressful situation. Run through your piece without the mirrors and ask a couple of friends to watch your performance to mimic your actual time on stage.
  7. BE HEALTHY!!! Don’t forget your beauty sleep, required rest and well balanced diet to nourish your amazing body!
  8. And finally LEARN TO ENJOY THE PROCESS!!! Do not turn the creative process into a burden, try to be yourself and follow your own path, recreating somebody’s else success is not the best idea. “Winning isn’t everything. It’s only one thing”.

GOOD LUCK! And remember you are your biggest competition!!!
