With most professions, whether physical or practical, there exists an education and or some form of certification process. You may have done some research and found that there are Pole Dance Certification courses available and you may also be wondering what Pole Dance Certification is, who is authorized to certify, and what that means exactly. We decided to remove doubt and confusion by doing a thorough investigation. Pole Dance Certification should be a process of verification and proof from a reliable association or reputable source that a person or entity has been thoroughly educated and is qualified to practice and teach Pole Dancing safely and effectively.
We firmly believe that a consistent, credible, and respectable certification program would be a good implementation for the industry of Pole Dance for several reasons. It would create a nationwide standard and curriculum which would include at the least an education of anatomy, physical fitness, safety measures, and pole dance techniques, by which every entity that wishes to certify would need to adhere to. This consistency would provide a form of guarantee that the certification services offered are in fact legitimate. An official certification standard would also help to remove the stigma associated with pole dancing and help to sanction support for the industry.
Currently Pole Dance Studios across the nation are offering a very broad variety of Pole Dance Certification Courses with and without backing from a national fitness association. Depending upon the entity offering these courses, there is considerable diversity and inconsistency within each of these categories: curriculum, price range, and accreditation. Below are some examples of what we have found.
Curriculum can range from 7 hours of simple teacher training including: safety measures and techniques, anatomy, class structure, injury prevention, and teaching techniques, with no lessons on how to pole dance or run a pole dancing business; to a 3 day workshop including: 4 levels of pole dancing moves and techniques, warm up and cool down techniques, the psychology and history of pole dancing, choreography, pole fitness theory, business plan, liability waivers, insurance options, and including continuing education credits or units (CECs or CEUs), plus all that was included in the former option. Most importantly these are not the only 2 options in a pole dance certification course. We found several variations of everything in between.
The First course mentioned above runs for about $400.00 and the latter can run up to about $3,500.00, but usually the course costs anywhere from $1,000.00 to $2,500.00 with and without the option for CECs and CEUs.
The certification courses being offered that also offer CECs or CEUs have been reviewed by a Fitness Association, such as the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and or the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), and have been approved as a viable source of continuing education credits or units. Usually that also means a Certified Personal Trainer is teaching or affiliated with the course. We spoke directly with the AFAA and ACE about their accreditations and continuing education and they recommended that a Pole Dance Studio be first Certified in Fitness by an accredited association as it would provide a foundation from which to spring from. As of yet this is as close as it gets, that we have found, to having an Official Fitness Association Accredited Pole Dance Certification Course in itself.
However, there is a national association called the Pole Fitness Association that is working on an Official Nationwide Pole Dance Certification Course. Unfortunately we are currently unaware of when that will become available and precisely what the curriculum will entail.
To its credit, Pole Dancing is still a very young sport and though efforts are being made to unify and strengthen it, there is still room for growth. We would encourage that before signing up to any certification course that one do a thorough research of all the options and what is available before making a financial decision. On a positive note, there is beauty in that we are pioneering a new pathway for the future, and we can watch and participate in the shaping of a new and exciting field.
